Advantages & Disadvantages

  • They remain in place
  • They are comfortable to wear as there is no eyelid sensation
  • No dust can accumulate behind the lenses
  • They are not fragile and are therefore easily maintained
  • The liquid layer provides optical correction of an irregular corneal surface
  • The liquid layer soothes and hydrates the corneal surface
  • Virtually any corneal irregularity is fittable

  • modern scleral lenses are not available world-wide
  • only a few fitting centres exist in the world

Unfortunately, widely held misgivings still exist about scleral lenses, based on old designs and fitting methods. Most complications relating to scleral lenses, however, have been solved with the introduction of gas-permeable materials. Poor fitting and non-gas-permeable materials have been responsible for the majority of known complications.
